Preparing a Guest Room for Cleaning

Room attendants are located in any tourism and hospitality business that provides accommodation to their guests. Their role is to facilitate the comfort and satisfaction of guests by ensuring that their “home away from home‟ is clean, safe and presented in an appealing manner. 

The basic procedures used in a typical hotel guest room cleaning are given below:

1. Entering the Guest Room

    -Knock twice announcing “housekeeping” after each knock to check if guest is in the room

    -If no one is in the room put on cleaning sign at the door to start cleaning. 

             - If a guest is in the room, apologize and ask the guest if they would like the room cleaned later.

    -Show the guest where the Do Not Disturb sign (DND) is placed in the room so that they are not disturbed again.

    -Note the room number and come back later to clean.


2. Cleaning Preparation - Remove All Trash   & Linen

  • Wear gloves while collecting trash and clean the trash cans inside out with an appropriate cleaner.

  • Strip the bed linen and do not place any pillows , blankets or comforters on the floor.

  • Strip the bathroom towels & spray disinfectant on the bathroom floor, sink, seat and base of the toilet .

3. Make beds

  • All Sheets should be folded into packs for easy cart stocking and quick access.

  • Put a bed sheet. Ensure that the corners are squared off.

  •   While putting on pillow cases we should not put the pillow under our chin.

  • King beds should always have three pillows.


4. Clean Bathroom

  • Clean the shower walls, showerhead, bathtub shower liner and the toilet .

  • Fold the toilet paper &  facial tissues.

  • Clean the ice bucket &  coffee pot in the sink

  • Restock all towels and amenities in the bathroom. 

  • Sweep the floor & clean it . Use adhesive (sticky) rollers to remove remaining hairs from the bathtub.


5. Wipe Down & Dust

  • Ensure all the electronics items are working.

  • Be sure to wipe down the phone, closet, lamp shades, etc.

  • Clean  the mirrors and windows.

  • Make sure all collateral in the room is crisp and fresh. If any pieces are stained or damaged they must be replaced.


6. Leaving the Guest Room Ready for Inspection

  • Once you are done cleaning, the room is ready for inspection

  • Check if all the electronics are working properly.

  • Ensure that the edges of the comforter are flipped up.

Ensure the balcony doors and windows are locked.
